Timberwolves rumors: Rudy Gobert trade buzz will only get louder as insiders deliver harsh truths
The Minnesota Timberwolves will ponder a lot of questions in the offseason after getting booted out of the playoffs. One of them: What to do with Rudy Gobert?
Gobert was lauded after a solid job in limiting Victor Wembanyama in Game 1 of their second-round series against the San Antonio Spurs. But everything went downhill from there for Gobert, as Wembanyama manhandled him and led the Spurs to the conference finals.
After getting exposed, the 33-year-old center could be on the chopping block, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer.
“Rudy Gobert, as much as he’s been an absolute floor raiser that helped Minnesota win significant games in the regular season year after year, his shortcomings offensively have been shown,” said Fischer, as quoted by BasketNews.
Fischer added that the Timberwolves might not deem the four-time Defensive Player of the Year a part of their long-term core. Coach Chris Finch has repeatedly expressed his faith in Gobert despite his offensive limitations.
Timberwolves reporter Darren Wolfson, meanwhile, posited that Minnesota’s ceiling will always be limited as long as Gobert is around.
“I’ve always come to the conclusion that if Rudy Gobert is playing 30 to 35 minutes a night, you’re not winning a championship. I’ve thought that for years, I continue to think that, but he’s an incredible floor raiser,” said Wolfson.
He noted that the Charlotte Hornets, the New Orleans Pelicans, the Toronto Raptors, or the Chicago Bulls could be landing spots for Gobert, who averaged 7.2 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.1 blocks.
The three-time All-Star signed a three-year, $110 million contract extension with the Timberwolves in 2024.
