Tigers’ AJ Hinch shuts down ‘ridiculous’ rumors about Tarik Skubal not needing rehab assignment

Detroit Tigers star Tarik Skubal is currently recovering from elbow surgery. While some reports have suggested that Skubal could return earlier than expected, a recent report drew attention that said he could possibly return next week without even needing an injury rehab assignment. The rumor reportedly came from Will Carroll’s substack and was shared on X, formerly Twitter, by Rob Silver.

“That’s right – after two mound sessions, Skubal, the Tigers, and his advisors are discussing whether a rehab assignment is necessary, meaning he could be back as soon as next week.”

Tigers manager AJ Hinch shut down the idea that Skubal could return next week without even needing a rehab assignment.

“A.J. Hinch pushed back on speculation Tarik Skubal could be back as soon as next week without a rehab assignment. ‘That’s not true,’ Hinch said. ‘That’s ridiculous.’ Safe to assume Skubal will have a rehab start, Hinch said,” Jason Beck reported.

Skubal, 29, pitched to a 2.70 ERA across seven starts before landing on the injured list. He also struck out 45 batters in his 43.1 innings of work. The Tigers star earned the American League Cy Young Award in both 2024 and 2025, and he looked like a legitimate Cy Young candidate once again early in 2026.

Regardless of whether or not he competes for the Cy Young this year, the Tigers are hopeful he can return soon. However, he will likely need a rehab assignment and he probably will not return next week.

Updates on Tarik Skubal’s injury status will be provided as they are made available.
