Thunder’s Mark Daigneault had hilarious exchange with reporter after Game 4 loss

The Oklahoma City Thunder, for as elite of a roster as they have a built, are still susceptible to the occasional off-night. Any team in the NBA is, regardless of caliber. But the Thunder have been so dominant that it can be a bit stunning to fans when they struggle the way they did on Sunday in their 103-82 loss to the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals.

The Spurs shut down the Thunder’s offense, limiting them to just 33 percent shooting from the field in the Game 4 defeat (18.2 percent from deep). This was as bad as OKC has looked all season long, and head coach Mark Daigneault had to be reminded of the fact that they did encounter a few similar troubles in their run to the title last year.

“Mark you had some clunkers in the playoffs last year,” Thunder beat reporter Jenni Carlson of The Oklahoman said.

“Thank you. Thanks for reminding me. It’s over Jenni,” Daigneault replied.

Last year, the Thunder had three double-digit defeats in the playoffs — one in each of the final three rounds. They lost Game 6 of their back-and-forth series against the Denver Nuggets by 12, got obliterated by the Minnesota Timberwolves to the tune of a 42-point defeat in the Western Conference Finals, and lost by 17 in Game 6 of the NBA Finals against the Indiana Pacers.

That loss to the Timberwolves, in particular, was as ugly as it can get; they went down by 20 in the first quarter which then ballooned to 31 by the halftime interval, and they could not recover.

While they did not get destroyed to that degree in Game 4 against the Spurs, the manner of defeat is certainly similar. But the Thunder, each time after losing by double digits in the playoffs, were able to retaliate, which speaks volumes to their resiliency and composure.
