Courtney Williams ruled out for Valkyries clash

The Minnesota Lynx host the Golden State Valkyries on Monday in a big pre-playoff clash between the teams with the two best records in the league, but they’re going to be a little short-handed. All-Star guard Courtney Williams has been ruled out on the Lynx’s injury report, the team announced on Sunday.

Courtney Williams suffered a foot injury during the Lynx’s win against the Washington Mystics last Friday, and she will miss her first game of the season. The injury occurred with less than a minute to go in Friday’s game, and her status moving forward certainly gives Lynx fans some pause for concern with only six game remaining on the regular season schedule before the postseason.

Williams had appeared in all 38 games to this point, at a little over 30 minutes per game. She was averaging 14.4 points, the third-highest mark of her career, to go along with 5.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.1 steals alongside splits of 45.4 percent shooting from the field, 36.1 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 82 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

The 11-year veteran was selected to her third All-Star appearance this season, and second consecutive, while being an integral piece for the title contender. This is Williams’ third year with the Lynx after signing as a free agent on a two-year contract ahead of the 2024 season. This past offseason, she re-signed on a two-year max contract.

Williams initially began her career with the Phoenix Mercury after they selected her with the No. 8 overall pick in he 2016 WNBA Draft. In addition to the Lynx and Mercury, she has also had stints with the Connecticut Sun, Atlanta Dream and Chicago Sky.
