Texas Southern makes big move towards finding new basketball coach

Following the departure of Johnny Jones, Texas Southern has made a significant step toward hiring its next head coach. According to a report by Kyle T. Mosley of HBCU Legends, the institution has hired DHR Global to facilitate a national search for the next leader of the men’s basketball program. DHR Global is set to facilitate the hiring of the next head coach by vetting and presenting a pool of candidates they believe are qualified to lead the program based on Texas Southern’s recent history.

The addition of DHR Global to the search for the next basketball coach comes after Jonny Jones departed Texas Southern to join Will Wade’s coaching staff at LSU. Jones officially announced his departure from the institution on April 7th following weeks of speculation on if he would indeed be joining LSU’s coaching staff.

Before arriving at Texas Southern University, Johnny Jones built deep ties to Louisiana State University. A former Tigers player from 1980 to 1984, he later returned to his alma mater and served as head coach from 2012 through 2017. Jones was hired by Texas Southern in 2018 and soon established the program as one of the SWAC’s premier teams, leading the Tigers to three straight conference tournament titles and multiple NCAA Tournament berths.

His tenure in Houston began with a stretch of sustained success, as Texas Southern recorded winning seasons in three of his first four years. More recently, however, the program has faced greater challenges. The Tigers went 12–18 overall and 10–8 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play last season before their year ended with an 85–74 loss to the Alabama A&M Bulldogs men’s basketball in the opening round of the conference tournament.

With the assistance of DHR Global, Texas Southern looks to turn the page on Jones and find another head coach who can lead the team to perennial success in the SWAC.
