Warriors rumors: What would surprise Dubs insider about Stephen Curry contract extension
Stephen Curry has repeatedly said he wants to finish his career with the Golden State Warriors. The feeling appears to be mutual, making his contract extension with the Warriors very inevitable.
It is, however, more than rewarding Curry with a much-deserved deal. The structure of his contract extension could play a significant role in determining how Golden State approaches the final chapter of the four-time champion’s era.
For ESPN’s Anthony Slater, there is a clear option for Curry and the Warriors.
“I would not be shocked if he takes the max. I would probably be a little bit more surprised if he locked into a haircut now. Now, again, he might be a wait-and-see thing—what can and can’t get done,” said Slater on 95.7 The Game.
“Guys like max money.”
Curry is eligible for a contract extension for two years at $136.7 million.
It is hard to imagine Curry going anywhere but Golden State. He is expected to get a suitable offer, if not the maximum amount, from the front office, although his age and injury history will probably be factored in.
“Let’s go down the list of superstars. Most of them take every year to a 30% max instead of 25%. It’s not like he took some massive pay cut. Typically, guys don’t necessarily do that, and look, the Warriors should, even if Steph Curry is on a max contract. They have a ton of flexibility,” added Slater.
Curry said his contract extension will happen “at the right time” and that he will not allow it to become a distraction as the Warriors prepare for the upcoming season.
Last season, the two-time MVP averaged 26.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 1.1 steals in 43 games.
