Yankees’ Cam Schlittler makes franchise history with latest dominant gem

With the New York Yankees still looking to win the AL East, the team has the help of ace pitcher Cam Schlittler, who turned in another impeccable outing in Wednesday’s 6-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels. As the Yankees captured the win over the Angels in 10 innings on Wednesday, Schlittler’s start was also historic.

Schlittler would throw eight innings, striking out nine while allowing two hits, one earned run, and walking zero batters. According to the team, Schlittler has allowed “one run or fewer in 19 starts this season,” which is the most in franchise history.

Despite the great run, there was one negative in Schlittler’s start prior against the Boston Red Sox last Friday, as he issued a career-high five walks, and the 25-year-old credited a “mental shift” in his command before the Angels contest.

“Just a mental shift a little bit, just a little reset,” Schlittler said, via MLB.com. “[It was about] just going out there and throwing the ball, trusting that it’s going to go where it needs to go. Last couple starts, I was trying to be too perfect. Today, I was able to just pound the zone.”​

Schlittler has been dynamite for the Yankees this season, recording a 2.04 ERA to go along with 210 strikeouts and a 12-6 record in 29 starts. Gaining praise from his team, such as Cody Bellinger calling playing behind Schlittler as “beyond special,” saying “he’s injected a ton of energy into our locker room,” manager Aaron Boone would also talk about his impressive outing.

“I thought his command was really good — strike-throwing was excellent again,” Boone said. “I think he combined that strike throwing with the stuff we’ve seen all along. When he’s putting the ball where he wants, he’s really tough to hit. He was on the attack all night and dictating counts.”

Schlittler looks to help New York even further, as the team is at an 80-60 record, three-and-a-half games back of the Tampa Bay Rays at the top spot in the AL East, with the series against the San Diego Padres starting on Friday.
