Dianna Russini gives brief statement as The Athletic finds her ‘noncompliant’ with standards over Mike Vrabel relationship

At long last, The Athletic’s investigation of Dianna Russini, its former lead NFL insider, has concluded after her involvement in a scandal with Mike Vrabel, and she was found “noncompliant” with its standards.

On Thursday, Sep. 3, 2026, The Athletic announced that Russini violated its standards with her inappropriate relationship with Vrabel. While the investigation didn’t draw any conclusions about the “full extent” of its former NFL insider’s relationship with the New England Patriots’ head coach, it found “scant evidence that it impacted” her or The Athletic’s reporting on Vrabel and his teams.

Russini declined an interview with The Athletic. However, she issued a brief statement: “I stand by any and all reporting I’ve ever done in my career.”

Mike Semel, The Athletic’s editorial director for standards and editorial quality, conducted a review of her work — but not her personal conduct — on Vrabel, viewing 903 stories and 77 videos published on The Athletic’s website that she wrote or contributed to, also comparing 75 stories by The Athletic about things involving Vrabel to other publications. He also watched or listened to her appearances on the outlet’s podcasts. Around 14 Athletic staffers were interviewed by Semel as well.

Ultimately, a “vast majority” of Russini’s work for The Athletic didn’t have to do with Vrabel. Of the roughly 46 stories about Vrabel or his teams, about a third of them were “transactional moves about trades or hires.” None of them were exclusive stories.

“Russini should have disclosed to The Athletic the nature of her relationship with Vrabel to allow editors to assess the kinds of stories on which she should have been working, if any,” Semel said. “She did not.”

The scandal first arose in April 2026 when Page Six published photos of Russini and Vrabel at a resort in Sedona together. The pictures implied an intimate relationship of some kind. Meanwhile, they are both married to other people. However, while the story broke in April, Russini allegedly kept silent to her editors and managers until two days later.

Russini was initially suspended by The Athletic upon the scandal breaking. She would resign from the publication a week after the scandal first arose.
