Will Caleb Williams pull a Tom Brady, Jalen Brunson, Victor Wembanyama on next contract?
The Chicago Bears are safe to say they have their franchise quarterback in Caleb Williams, and next year they’ll be able to pay him like one. If he takes another step this season, that number could jump up, but Williams doesn’t seem to be worried about how much he’s getting, which should raise the eyebrows of Bears fans.
“Money’s not a motivating factor for me in that sense,” Williams said via Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times. “If I wanted to be done today, I’d be fine. If I wanted to be done and go somewhere and disappear for a long time and never come back and y’all would never see me again, I’d be OK. That’s not my motivation.
“Winning, winning, winning handles everything… so that’s where my mind’s at.”
That means there could be a world where Williams takes a discount with the Bears in hopes of helping build a contender around him. That’s the route that Tom Brady and Jalen Brunson took for the respective teams, and in the end, they were able to win a championship.
Victor Wembanyama just took that route, and the hope is that the San Antonio Spurs can win a championship in the coming years.
The Bears showed flashes of being a team that could be a contender for years to come, and it’ll only happen if they continue to get better, while also having the resources to get better. While money also isn’t a big deal for Williams, he just wants to be in one place for the rest of his career.
“I obviously want to be here forever,” Williams said. “That’s a goal of mine: to be at one place until I’m done, until I decide that it’s over for me and I want to go home and ride off into the sun… I’ll be here.”
