Ex-76ers Thaddeus Young’s first time meeting Allen Iverson is all sorts of wild

Thaddeus Young got an unforgettable introduction to Allen Iverson when the Philadelphia 76ers legend returned to the team during Young’s rookie season. Appearing on the To The Baha podcast, Young recalled how Iverson’s return immediately made an impression on him. The two ended up with lockers next to each other at the practice facility, but the Answer didn’t exactly make the rookie’s first interaction with him a traditional one.

Young said Iverson arrived to find some of his belongings in Young’s locker. Iverson then jokingly confronted the rookie, telling him not to touch his things again. Young’s response was essentially to give the veteran his space.

“I’m like, you know what? I’ll sit over here,” Young said. “This your locker room, champ. You got it, big dog. Like, there’s nothing I can do or say.”

The exchange perfectly captured the aura Iverson carried around the 76ers at the time. Young was a first-round pick just months earlier, while Iverson was already an established franchise icon and one of the NBA’s biggest stars.

Young also remembered another detail that made the experience even more memorable. The 2001 NBA MVP would show up with an old iPod loaded entirely with Michael Jackson songs, along with his signature oversized jeans and Superman underwear worn over them.

“At that point, I knew, I was like, he can’t do no wrong,” Young said.

Young’s first season in Philadelphia came in 2007-08, after the 76ers selected him No. 12 overall in the NBA Draft. Iverson had already been traded to the Denver Nuggets the previous December, but he returned to Philadelphia in December 2009.

Still, Young’s story reflects the kind of larger-than-life presence Iverson had among his teammates. Years later, he has continued to look back on that first interaction as one of his most memorable experiences with the Hall of Famer.

And considering who Iverson was in Philadelphia, getting an introduction like that was probably about as fitting as it could get.
