Dodgers still winless in Cardinals series after unfortunate 10th inning

It looked like the Los Angeles Dodgers were going to run away with the game on Wednesday against the St. Louis Cardinals after Freddie Freeman hit a three-run shot to put them up in the first inning, But as the old adage goes, it’s not about how you start, it’s how you finish. The Dodgers could not hold on to their lead, and the game ended up going to extras. That’s when the Cardinals struck, scoring three runs in the top of the 10th to put the game away in an 8-6 loss for LA.

Bullpen issues are nothing new for the Dodgers this season, and on Wednesday, it was Brock Stewart’s turn to cost LA the game. Stewart allowed three consecutive hits, one each to Nathan Church, Thomas Saggese, and Joshua Baez, with Baez’s hit being a double, and that’s all she wrote as the Dodgers fell behind 8-5.

In the bottom of the 10th, the Dodgers pulled one back when a groundout from Tommy Edman drove in Will Smith from third after Smith had moved 90 feet following a passed ball. But they couldn’t muster much of a threat. Shohei Ohtani struck out to begin the inning, and then Mookie Betts lined out to center field to end the game.

Their pitching staff hasn’t been locked in as of late. After a disastrous start from Eric Lauer doomed them in the series-opener, Yoshinobu Yamamoto couldn’t keep the Dodgers in the lead after he allowed the Cardinals to score four runs in a rare subpar start for the 28-year-old Japanese international.

The Dodgers have officially lost the three-game series to the Cardinals at home, having dropped two consecutive games. They can at least end the series on a strong note tomorrow night, when Tarik Skubal takes the mound for the team as they look to avoid getting swept.
