Sparks reunite with veteran guard in latest free agency move

It’s been a busy offseason for the Los Angeles Sparks so far. With an abridged timeline due to the CBA negotiations, there’s only about a week before the start of training camp. The Sparks struck early in WNBA free agency, agreeing to terms with former franchise star Nneka Ogwumike. After also agreeing to re-sign Dearica Hamby, the Sparks have come to terms to bring back veteran guard Erica Wheeler, she announced via social media.

This will be Erica Wheeler’s second go-round with the Sparks, having signed with the organization in free agency back during the 2021 season. She only played one year with the team before being traded to the Atlanta Dream for the 2022 season. Wheeler finished up last season with the Seattle Storm.

With the Storm, Wheeler appeared in 44 games, including 24 starts, at a little over 25 minutes per game. She averaged 10.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.3 steals with splits of 40 percent shooting from the field, 37.3 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 86 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

After going undrafted in the 2013 WNBA Draft, Wheeler did not break through to the league until the 2015 season during which she split time with the Dream and the New York Liberty.

With the reported and agreed upon deals to this point, the Sparks now have six players accounted for on their roster with six more spots to address before the start of the season. They have agreed to free agent contracts with Ogwumike, Hamby and now Wheeler. They already have Cameron Brink and Sania Feagin under contract. With Kelsey Plum receiving a core designation, there’s no reason to believe she won’t be back.

The Sparks still have the rumored trade to with the Chicago Sky to address involving Rickea Jackson and Ariel Atkins. With free agency in full swing, there’s still a few more moves for the Sparks to make.
