Heat’s Klay Thompson already has great plans after arriving in Miami

There was a time when it was impossible to imagine Klay Thompson playing for any team other than the Golden State Warriors. Now, he is on his third squad after signing with the Miami Heat following his buyout from the Dallas Mavericks.

After an empty two-year stint with the Mavericks, Thompson made it known that he wanted to join a championship contender and chase a fifth ring. The Heat became an ideal destination, especially with the addition of Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The 36-year-old Thompson gave up almost $10 million in his buyout with Dallas to sign a two-year, $13 million contract with Miami.

On Monday, he was all smiles as he arrived in South Beach to begin the new chapter in his illustrious career.

“My joints just feel good being out here with this climate,” said Thompson.

“I can’t wait to meet the staff, my co-workers, the executives, try new cuisines, get some really good local food, and get to work. I was always here in passing, so it’s nice to be planted, just being able to experience a great place.”

While leg injuries have slowed down the four-time champion, he is still a valuable weapon. He can still drop eight three-pointers on any given night.

Plus, coach Erik Spoelstra has a knack for effectively utilizing outside shooters—Ray Allen, Duncan Robinson, and Max Strus easily come to mind—so Thompson should not have any trouble adjusting to the system.

Being the fierce competitor that he is, Thompson is probably eager to bounce back after his dud last season, averaging career-lows of 11.7 points, 39.3% shooting, 2.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 21.7 minutes off the bench.

He has a chance to start on the Heat, along with Davion Mitchell, Andrew Wiggins, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Bam Adebayo.
