After the Washington Commanders star took action against his alma mater LSU over their use of his #5 jersey, Daniels has been clowned endlessly on social media. The current running joke around Daniels is mockingly not using the number five as a form of “respect” for the star.

It’s interesting, then, that the College Football Playoff page on X seemingly made a reference to this meme… without overtly talking about Daniels. The CFP’s post asking their followers who the greatest player to wear #5 seems innocuous at first glance. Given the current meme landscape on social media, though, one might wonder if the page was hinting at the Commanders star’s current debacle.

Daniels is currently being clowned on social media after his family threatened legal action against LSU. This issue stems from Lane Kiffin and the team’s decision to give the #5 jersey to sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett. According to the Daniels family, they were promised that the Commanders quarterback’s jersey will never be used after his Heisman-winning season. LSU has only one jersey number retired, Billy Cannon’s #20 jersey. Cannon is the first Tiger to win the Heisman.

Because of this fiasco, the Commanders quarterback is now catchig a ton of heat from fans, who find this current sitaution to be ridiculous. Many are making jokes about the family by saying that they’re not using the number five as “respect” for Daniels. This has been an abject PR disaster for the Daniels family heading into the 2026 season.

Daniels and the Commanders are looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2025 campaign. Coming off the heels of an NFC Championship game appearance in Daniels’ rookie year, the team completely missed the playoffs. One of the biggest factors in their 2025 campaign is their quarterback’s injuries: Daniels missed a significant chunk of the season after sustaining injuries throughout the year.
