Diamondbacks’ Merrill Kelly alleges Cubs coach was relaying signs

The start of the work week wasn’t very kind to the Arizona Diamondbacks. They were on the receiving end of a 7-0 demolition at the hands of the Chicago Cubs, and considering that the Diamondbacks are chasing a postseason spot, losses like this do not help. However, starting pitcher Merrill Kelly believes that the Cubs crossed a line on Monday, which helped them grab a convincing victory over the Diamondbacks.

Kelly, who allowed three earned runs on five hits and three walks before being pulled with two outs in the sixth inning, alleged that the Cubs’ third base coach was relaying signs. It got to a point where Kelly and Cubs third base coach Quintin Berry were chirping at one another.

“We just thought that he was relaying signs. We thought he had something on my changeup. We thought he was giving, especially to lefties, every time I was throwing a changeup,” Kelly said, via Cameron Cox of 12 News. “Stealing signs is as old as baseball. I think it’s a little bulls**t when it comes from a coach.”

“If it’s a guy on second base and they see the grip in your glove. Or if the hitters can see something that you’re doing with your glove. I think that’s fair game. Guys have been doing that since the beginning of baseball. I think it’s a little bush league when it comes from outside that.”

But at the end of the day, the Diamondbacks veteran acknowledged that he has to be better at hiding his intentions on the mound, knowing that if the Cubs picked up on it, others would too.

“I got to take a look at what I’m doing because clearly he had something. Obviously, if he has it, then other people would probably pick up on it as well. I got to figure out and do better on my part to not give it away,” Kelly added.
