Southampton vs West Ham prediction
With both clubs having iffy starts to their league campaigns. Will the EFL Cup be a welcome respite to kick-start their seasons or will we see both managers rest and rotate for their weekend fixtures?
Having dispatched Southampton’s fierce local rivals, Portsmouth in the first round, West Ham now take on the Saints down south. But which club will be going all out for victory.
The Hammers went a goal down to Pompey before Jarrod Bowen and Taty Castellanos showed their class to win the tie 3-1.
Southampton dispatched Colchester Utd 2-0 in Essex to earn their spot in round two.
A tough opening first 45 minutes, made way for a final flourish from Tonda Eckert’s men to win the game in the final 20 minutes.
Both clubs will seemingly dip back into the transfer market this week, but must decide on the benefits of a cup run first.
Southampton vs West Ham tips
Larin’s fast start to continue
Cyle Larin has scored in all three competitive matches this season. He scored the opener in two of these, including the 2-0 win over Colchester in the last round and last weekend’s 3-1 win over Stoke.
When Larin’s on the pitch, he scores. The Canadian forward to open the scoring on Tuesday could be the value play.
BTTS as Piroe scores again
Southampton bounced back from Championship opening day defeat to Watford with an impressive 3-1 win over Stoke on Saturday.
While West Ham had the ball in the back of the net twice, before the stoppage time missed penalty from Taty Castellanos to salvage a 2-2 home draw with Charlton.
It shows both sides have the capabilities to score goals but may have a porous defences.
Joel Piroe bagged a debut goal for the Hammers in the defeat to the Addicks. He’s a second tier bags-man, having never scored less than 13 goals in a full Championship season for both Swansea and Leeds.
The Dutch forward is comfortable at this level and could well find the back of the net again.
