Angel Reese issues emphatic warning to WNBA after historic record-breaking night

The records keep tumbling for Angel Reese.

In the Atlanta Dream’s 78-71 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Monday night, Reese grabbed 26 rebounds (18 defensive and eight offensive boards) to go with her 11 points, three assists and three steals.

Not only was it a career-high for the star forward, but no other player in WNBA history has ever grabbed that many boards in a single game.

“Anything that goes up is mine,” Reese said after the game in a warning to the league. “I want to be one of (the best) when I walk away from the game.

“So just being able to … be consistent every night is something I’m looking forward to doing.”

Furthermore, she also set a new single-season record with 458 total rebounds, surpassing four-time MVP A’ja Wilson’s mark of 451 set back in the 2024 season.

Reese, however, still has six regular season games remaining to extend her record.

But that wasn’t the only milestone that she reached as the 24-year-old also recorded yet another double-double – her 27th of the season – just one shy of tying the single-season record set by Alyssa Thomas in 2023.

“Last time I was here, I didn’t miss any shots. Tonight, I couldn’t hit s***, so I knew I was going be able to get them on the rebounding side,” Reese said postgame.

“I just want to be consistent for my team. Offensively, defensively, whatever it takes to win.”

Her teammates were even left in disbelief at what Reese accomplished on Monday night.

“I was looking at the stat thing and I’m like, ‘Dang, 20 something,'” Dream guard Allisha Gray – one of the best players in the WNBA – said.

“I don’t think in my life I got more than 10 rebounds. So that’s just a talent. I’m just in awe just watching her rebound.”

Reese’s first season in Atlanta has been a fruitful one.

After her blockbuster trade from the Chicago Sky during the off-season, the former LSU star has gone from strength-to-strength, seeing improvements in all facets of her game, especially her shooting.

Averaging 16.3 points per contest to go with 12 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.8 steals, Reese has credited Dream head coach Karl Smesko for instilling confidence in her own abilities.

“He [Smesko] works with my shooting every single day,” Reese said on Monday. “Me being able to knock down threes, being consistent in my jump shot, finishing around the basket.

“And my teammates too, they put in a lot of work. It helped me a lot. They get mad at me when I don’t shoot it. So I just continue to just stay poised and push through everything.”

With the Dream having picked up their 25th win of the season, they have punched their ticket to the playoffs – the first time the two-time WNBA All-Star will ever feature in a postseason after back-to-back losing seasons with the Sky in 2024 and 2025.
