Sabrina Ionescu, Satou Sabally injury updates vs. Valkyries hint at imminent return

The New York Liberty have started off the 2026 WNBA season at 3-1, and they are on the verge of receiving reinforcements as well. The Liberty have been without Sabrina Ionescu and Satou Sabally for the first four games of the season due to injury, but they both received encouraging updates this week.

Both Sabrina Ionescu and Satou Sabally were officially listed as questionable on the Liberty’s injury report for their upcoming game against the Golden State Valkyries, as per Jackie Powell of The IX Sports. While it’s not a given that either player makes their 2026 debut, it does suggest that they are close to returning to the lineup.

In addition, starting shooting guard Betnijah Laney-Hamilton was not present at Liberty practice due to a personal matter. Laney-Hamilton has made her return to the court after missing all of last season due to a knee injury and subsequent recovery.

Ionescu did participate in training camp, but sustained both an ankle and foot injury during a preseason game against the Connecticut Sun, and she’s been sidelined since. In Sabally’s case, she developed a cyst and did not participate in training camp or preseason. Sabally was also sidelined during the offseason with Unrivaled due to lingering effects from the concussion she suffered during last year’s WNBA Finals.

Sabally was the Liberty’s major offseason acquisition after signing with the team during free agency. With the Liberty looking to get back to contention, the versatile forward is expected to play a key role as one of the team’s starting forwards.

The Liberty are entering their first season with Chris DeMarco at the helm as head coach following the decision to part ways with Sandy Brondello.
