Sabres’ Sam Carrick gets stunning injury update ahead of Game 1 vs. Canadiens

For the first time since 2007, the Buffalo Sabres have advanced out of the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. After dispatching the Boston Bruins, the team is set to play against the Montreal Canadiens in the conference semifinals. Still, the Sabres could be shorthanded against the Habs.

Now, one of the players feared lost for the series with the Canadiens is getting an update on his injury status, per a release from the team.

Sam Carrick, who has been out since being injured in a fight on March 31 against the New York Islanders, has progressed and could return to practice shortly. He was originally projected to miss the second round of the playoffs.

“(He’s) going to see our doctors today and thinks he’s further along than maybe I portrayed yesterday,” coach Lindy Ruff said. “So, with good news, he could join our team back in practice tomorrow, which is great news. That would put him a little bit ahead of schedule.”

Carrick was acquired by the Sabres at the trade deadline from the New York Rangers. He played 13 games with the Sabres, finding the back of the net five times while adding four assists. Overall, he scored nine goals with seven assists in 73 games during the regular season.

Bringing back Carrick would be huge for the depth of the Sabres. Noah Ostlund is also expected to miss the second round of the playoffs. Ostlund played in three games in the first round of the playoffs, scoring once and adding an assist. He was injured in Game 5 against the Bruins after having a breakout season this past year, amassing 27 points in 60 games.

The Sabres and Canadiens are set to face off in Game 1 of the series on Wednesday night, with puck drop set for 7 p.m. ET.
