MLB rumors: Marlins shopping multiple players with Red Sox, Rays as potential suitors

The Miami Marlins find themselves in contention for a spot in this year’s Major League Baseball Playoffs. Ahead of Monday’s MLB trade deadline, the Marlins are looking at shopping players.

“As the Miami Marlins ponder trade scenarios, they are discussing catcher Liam Hicks and first baseman/outfielder Kyle Stowers more actively than shortstop Otto López and second baseman Xavier Edwards, according to league sources briefed on their conversations,” Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon reported for The Athletic.

It appears that at least two American League clubs are interested in what Miami has to offer.

“The Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox are among the teams interested in Hicks, the person said. The New York Yankees are not involved in the talks. Hicks bats left-handed, and the Yankees want a right-handed hitting receiver,” the writers added.

Boston and Tampa Bay are fighting it out in the American League East, for a chance to win that division. The New York Yankees are also in the race for the division crown. Tampa Bay currently leads that division, heading into Sunday.

Marlins look for a strong finish to season

On the season, Miami is 57-55. The Marlins are currently third in the National League East, behind the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies.

Marlins players are trying to drown out the trade noise.

“You just deal with it as best as you can,” Hicks said, per MLB.com. “Obviously, you’re going to hear some stuff, but luckily, this team’s just focused on winning right now, so it helps a lot when you’re a team that knows that you’ve got a chance to go to the playoffs. You’re not really focused on everyone selling and all that stuff because we really think we’ve got a chance. That’s good coming to the ballpark and having that on your mind.”

One of Miami’s strongest trade chips is starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara. While the team has heard from other clubs this year that want the hurler, the Marlins have reportedly said Alcantara won’t be leaving the team before the deadline.

The Marlins are playing the New York Mets on Sunday.
