Giants’ Matt Chapman’s uncomfortable injury update will catch trade suitors’ attention

The San Francisco Giants are primed to be one of the biggest trade deadline sellers in MLB. Players such as Robbie Ray, Luis Arraez, and Jung Hoo Lee have been reported as trade candidates. Matt Chapman, the team’s star third baseman who has five Gold Gloves to his name, has also been linked as someone who could be traded.

Chapman is a one-time All-Star who would not only bring some of the best hot corner defense in baseball to a new team, but he is a reliable weapon at the plate, too. However, the former Oakland Athletics/Toronto Blue Jays star has been on the 10-Day Injured List since July 1 because of an abdominal issue.

Said issue has plagued Chapman since April, but his injury was exacerbated at the end of June. The Giants have been expecting their star to return to action soon, but they received an untimely update in the days leading up to the trade deadline. Susan Slusser reported that Chapman confirmed that running is still not comfortable for him. That news delays Chapman’s return and increases worry for how he will perform for the rest of the season. Slusser reported that the third baseman will see a team doctor to evaluate what steps are to come.

That news could scare off interested teams. Even so, there aren’t a lot of great third basemen on the trading block during this trade season that includes a lot more buyers than sellers, so teams that need hot corner help may have no option but to pursue the Giants’ star.
