Ryan Ward makes case for Dodgers’ roster spot long-term with clutch grand slam

Los Angeles Dodgers rookie Ryan Ward delivered a career milestone on Wednesday night, blasting his first Major League grand slam during the team’s road matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.

The 28-year-old outfielder and first baseman turned the game in the Dodgers’ favor when he crushed a first-pitch sweeper from Pirates reliever Carmen Mlodzinski into the right-field seats.

The homer came after Ward entered the at-bat 0-for-2 with a strikeout, making the breakthrough even more significant as he continues to compete for a long-term role on one of baseball’s deepest rosters.

MLB took to X, formerly Twitter, sharing video of the milestone moment for the outfielder.

“Ryan Ward’s first career grand slam! ”

Ward’s grand slam represented another important step in a journey that has taken years to reach the major leagues. Drafted in 2019, the rookie spent seven seasons working through the Dodgers’ farm system before receiving opportunities at the big-league level during the 2026 season.

The power display is consistent with what the rookie outfielder displayed in his minor league career. He hit 33 home runs in 2024 and followed that with 36 more in 2025, earning Pacific Coast League MVP honors last season. However, translating that production to Major League Baseball remained the primary question surrounding his future with the club.

Wednesday’s swing showed Ward’s power can translate against big-league pitching. He attacked Mlodzinski’s first pitch and drove it into the right-field seats, stretching the Dodgers’ lead to 6-1.

The rookie’s timing was also notable given his roster situation. After debuting earlier this season during Freddie Freeman’s paternity leave, he was later optioned before earning another shot with the Dodgers. His first career grand slam strengthened his case for a permanent role.
