Bears’ Jaylon Johnson reveals eye-opening Ben Johnson moment that ‘sparked’ him

The Chicago Bears were broken before Ben Johnson showed up. The former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator already helped revive one franchise, and he had the confidence to do it again. Most of the players in the locker room only knew a flawed culture, so one could imagine how jarring it was to hear a head coach make bold statements about the team’s ceiling. Everyone wants to believe, but sometimes it takes a strong leader to inspire true faith.

Jaylon Johnson had a transformative conversation with the man, one that is propelling him forward in his seventh NFL season.

“We had a talk, and I would say in my years being here, I’ve never had a talk {with} a coach saying we got a chance to win a Super Bowl,” the 2023 Second-Team All-Pro cornerback said, per FOX Bears reporter Devan Kaney. “So I think when he said that, it put some things in perspective for me. I have, we have the opportunity to do something special, so I think for me, it just sparked a different level of my competitive nature that I haven’t had since I’ve been here.”

A $76 million contract extension should have provided a spark on its own, but Johnson’s comments underscore the sense of hopelessness that had defined the Bears for several years. Ben Johnson came in ablaze and he has not cooled off yet. Chicago claimed its first NFC North title in seven seasons and won a playoff game for the first time since 2011. He has already brought change to The Windy City. Now, Johnson aims to deliver a Lombardi Trophy to the fan base.

He will probably need a healthy and impactful Jaylon Johnson to do it, however. The two-time Pro Bowl selection was not at his sharpest in 2025, playing only seven regular season games due to a groin injury. The 27-year-old has been a shutdown corner in the past, and with a fierce mindset and some better luck, he could come back in a big way in 2026.

The Bears’ Super Bowl prospects may depend on it. Caleb Williams and company should rack up points on offense, but the burden is on the defense to keep this squad out of shootouts. Chicago cannot continue to live dangerously. Stability is a hallmark of a winning organization.

The Bears are striving for that standard. Their second-year HC is making sure of it, and their top cornerback is ready to carry out the blueprint. Everyone seems to be on the same page.

Will that be the case in Sunday afternoon’s season-opening battle versus the Carolina Panthers?
