Ben Shelton dethrones Carlos Alcaraz with career-defining win at US Open

In a 24-hours sports news cycle that featured more LSU-SEC drama, the return of Aaron Judge and an improbable comeback by Frances Tiafoe, Ben Shelton wins the day, and the next one for that matter. The 23-year-old American went to depths he has never gone before and upset Carlos Alcaraz, a seven-time Grand Slam champion and a man who rarely falls in five-set matches.

Shelton did not carry himself like the underdog during this near-four-and-a-half-hour epic. He conducted himself like Alcaraz’s equal. And then he surpassed him.

The No. 8 seed displayed excellent conditioning, poise and power inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, clinching the quarterfinals victory with a blistering ace in the decisive 10-point tiebreak. The biggest moment of his professional career took place at 3:33 a.m. ET. It was certainly worth the wait.
