Rudy Gobert fires ‘underdog’ message to Timberwolves about frustrating officiating vs. Nuggets

On Saturday afternoon, the Minnesota Timberwolves dropped Game 1 of their series against the Denver Nuggets on the road by a score of 116-05. One point of frustration for the Timberwolves in this game was the officials, as Nuggets guard Jamal Murray shot a whopping 16 free throws and made every single one of them.

After the game, Nuggets big man Rudy Gobert kept it real on his team’s status regarding the officials in the series.

“I think we have to understand that we are the underdogs and that (we’re) definitely not going to get more calls than them,” Gobert said, per Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic. “So, you got to accept that. And no matter what’s being called on the floor, we can’t let that distract us. I think tonight we got too much frustration that carried over on the next possessions. If you want to beat this team, we can’t have that.”

Gobert was one of the few Timberwolves players who showed up on offense in this one, scoring 17 points on 8-9 from the field and also grabbing ten rebounds. Additionally, Gobert played some strong defense on Nuggets star Nikola Jokic, limiting the former league MVP to 25 points in the contest.

However, not many of Gobert’s teammates came along for the ride in this one, with Anthony Edwards not looking like his usual explosive self on offense, and Julius Randle and Jaden McDaniels both struggling to get anything going on offense.

The Timberwolves will need to be a lot more disciplined on both sides of the ball if they want to get back in the series in Game 2, which is set for Monday evening at 10:30 pm ET, once again from the Ball Arena in Denver.
