Bears’ Ben Johnson warns Caleb Williams losing the ‘goofy’ is a problem for NFL

Heading into Year 3 of his NFL career, the pressure is on for Caleb Williams to live up to his sky-high expectations.

Widely considered an elite quarterback prospect coming out of USC, Williams wasn’t named a Pro Bowler in 2025 but did make his playoff debut, showcasing a proficiency running Ben Johnson’s offense worthy of gracing the Madden 2027 cover.

Discussing what he’s seen from Williams heading into 2026, Ben Johnson noted he’s proud of his quarterback’s approach but doesn’t want him to lose the “goofiness” that contributed to his signature style.

“I’ve seen a very composed person every time he steps into the building. This guy might’ve had a little bit of goofy to him a year ago, and I use that term with love. And now you just see a more serious player and intent every time I’m around him,” Johnson said via The Score’s Chris Emma.

“And I think his teammates feel that as well. He’s getting to the practice field early, he’s making sure his part is taken care of, he’s warmed up, he’s ready to go, he’s staying after with the guys after practice. And so he’s taken a lot of pride in his approach right now. It trickles down to everybody around him. I think it’s a great thing. So, I think he continues to grow up, and he’s going to be a huge leader for us this year.”

From his signature pregame iced matchas to his painted nails and his enthusiastic overaccessorizing, Williams is a new kind of quarterback who has played a major role in advancing sports culture in Chicago. Even if Williams wants to really take a step forward in terms of preparation and on-field success, his backyard playing style is a big reason why he’s in this position in the first place.
