49ers’ Raheem Morris’ pass rush health update is a good sign for Nick Bosa

While most of the defensive attention turned toward the San Francisco 49ers has been placed firmly on Nick Bosa, who missed the vast majority of the 2025 NFL season with a torn ACL, new coordinator Raheem Morris has plenty working under the surface as he looks to keep Kyle Shanahan’s defense elite.

Discussing his defensive line and how it’s shaped up after the initial trimdown to 53, Morris noted he has a ton of talent on his roster, which is great news for Bosa as he returns from injury.

“I feel pretty deep there. Obviously, we had a bunch of guys, got a couple of guys claimed. Well, one guy claimed in particular, but we have some young guys we brought in here this year,” Morris said.

“The guys that we drafted throughout the process, whether it’s been AC, whether it’s been Wes, whether it’s been Halton coming back off injury, Osa. All of those guys having a chance, James Thompson got sharper at camp, being able to go out there and make the team. I think all those things have been really well. I like the inside interior people and what they’ve been able to do, particularly with some of the vision of some of those guys flexing down. We talked about Keion White or Mykel when he gets back. You got a bunch of different people in it that can play, give you some good rotational pieces to do some good things.”

Asked if he has a plan on who will play where and when for the 49ers on the defensive line, Morris said yes, even if he wasn’t too willing to get into the granular detail.

“Obviously, AC and CJ played a significant role last year. James and Osa are our new guys. Osa’s been brought here to solidify that 3-technique for us and do some really good things,” Morris said. “So I got a really good idea on what it’s gonna look like. Now we gotta go out there and do it.”

After very little worked in San Francisco’s favor in 2024, the team bounced back in a major way in 2025 despite suffering a slew of injuries, with Robert Saleh’s defense holding things down with a collection of mismatched parts, ranking 13th in points allowed and 20th in yards allowed down Mykel Williams, Bosa, and Fred Warner. With the defense much healthier, Morris has a chance to take the 49ers to a new level defensively, which, when paired with Shanahan’s offense, presents scary upside even in the NFC West.
