Wrexham terminate triple promotion hero’s contract before transfer deadline

Wrexham have mutually terminated the contract of midfielder Elliot Lee.

The 31-year-old arrived at the Welsh club from Luton Town in 2022 and quickly became a fan favourite.

He played a key role in the Red Dragons’ meteoric rise from the wilderness to their current standing as an established Championship club.

Lee, who was into the final year of his deal, clocked up an impressive 152 appearances for the club but found minutes hard to come by last season.

He leaves Wrexham as a free agent having netted 41 times for the club across all competitions. 

Boss Phil Parkinson paid an emotional tribute to the outgoing star and even found time to pitch him to possible suitors.

“I’d like to thank Elliot for what he has done for this football club.,” Parkinson said.

“He has been a great player for us here at Wrexham and has made a significant contribution to the club’s rise through the divisions.

“He is at the stage now where he is eager to go and play and get some minutes, and whoever gets him will get a player who still has a lot to offer.”

League One club Sheffield Wednesday are understood to be interested in bringing Lee to Hillsborough as they plot an immediate return to the Championship.

The midfielder featured heavily during Wrexham’s unprecedented three-consecutive promotions between the National League and the Championship.

His performances saw him pick up a number of individual accolades along the way.

Lee, son of former Premier League midfielder Rob Lee, was selected in the 2022/23 National League Team of the Year.

He repeated the feat 12 months later when he was named in the League Two Team of the Season and the Professional Footballers’ Association Team of the Year.

But as Wrexham moved further up the football pyramid, Lee’s game time was significantly reduced.

He made just three appearances last season, all coming in the EFL Cup.

It led to him joining Doncaster Rovers on loan where he went on to play 18 times.

Lee began his career at West Ham where he was loaned out on five separte ocassions.

After failing to make a breakthrough at the London Stadium, he was sold to Barnsley before securing a move to Luton 12 month later.
