Bengals’ Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins get murky injury updates from Zac Taylor
The Cincinnati Bengals are managing injuries to their top two wide receivers with less than two weeks remaining before their Sept. 13 season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins both missed Tuesday’s practice, but head coach Zac Taylor expects both receivers to be in good shape by the end of the week.
Chase is dealing with a hyperextended left knee suffered during practice on Aug. 25. The 26-year-old receiver lost his footing while attempting to catch a deep pass from quarterback Joe Burrow and remained on the ground briefly before leaving the field. Chase stayed on the sideline for the rest of that workout and has not practiced since the injury.
Following Tuesday’s practice, Taylor said Chase will be limited throughout the week but indicated he feels good about the receiver’s status.
Cincinnati has have additional time to manage Chase’s recovery because the team do not play until Sept. 13. The Bengals are scheduled to practice for two more days before taking three days off over Labor Day weekend. The team is not expected to begin its regular-season preparation until Sept. 7.
Higgins is dealing with a different issue. Taylor described the 27-year-old receiver’s injury as a small heel contusion that will also restrict his work this week.
Chase enters the season after another highly productive campaign. In 16 starts last year, he led the NFL with 185 targets and ranked third with 125 receptions, finishing with 1,412 yards and eight touchdowns. He earned first-team All-Pro recognition for the second straight season and made his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl.
Higgins also reached the Pro Bowl for the first time last season, recording 59 receptions, 846 yards and a career-best 11 touchdowns across 15 games, including 14 starts. Since entering the NFL in 2020, he has racked up 389 receptions, 5,441 yards and 45 touchdowns in 85 regular-season games.
