Why Lonzo Ball believes Jaylen Brown’s jersey needs to be retired by Celtics

The Boston Celtics made the shocking decision to trade Jaylen Brown this summer, sending him to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Paul George and draft compensation. But Brown’s time with the Celtics will always be remembered, and Lonzo Ball believes he needs to be honored.

Brown helped the Boston Celtics to two NBA Finals appearances, and led them to the 2024 NBA Championship while being named NBA Finals MVP in the process.

On one of the latest episodes of the Ball in the Family podcast, former Lakers and Bulls guard Lonzo Ball says he thinks the Celtics need to do right by Brown and retire his jersey.

“Do you guys agree that Jaylen Brown’s jersey should be retired [with the Celtics]?” the host asked.

“I got to see all the accolades, but if you line up Boston’s best players ever, he’s in my top five. So put that sh-t up there. Agreed. Who’s f–king with him on the wing?”

“Okay, let’s talk about it,” The host continued. “Paul Pierce. Paul Pierce. Ray Allen. Rondo. Rondo. Bill Russell, out of respect.

Lonzo Ball then cut him off to say, “The only two wings is better to him is Paul Pierce and Larry Bird. I was going to say Larry Bird. Larry and Paul. That’s him. Boom. So him? Tatum? He’s a little better than Tatum.

“What about Jayson Tatum?”

“I think Brown’s a little better. They both obviously are great players. He’s low-key frying [Larry] Bird. I don’t want to be disrespectful. Fry. Jaylen Brown has a better chance of guarding him than he has of guarding Jaylen Brown.”

The debate essentially ended with the host saying, “If you’re going to retire [Kevin Garnett] and Paul Pierce and they want one ring, I do believe that you should retire Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.”

“If you line up Boston’s best players ever, he’s in my top 5… So put that sh*t up there… He would lowkey fry [Larry Bird].”

Jaylen Brown finished his Boston Celtics career having played 10 years with the franchise, averaging 20 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.0 steal per game while shooting 47.8 percent from the field and 35.8 percent from three.
