How Arte Moreno is remaining involved with Angels after sale

Los Angeles Angels fans received a huge bombshell on Tuesday afternoon. The Angels are being sold to Stan Kroenke, the owner of the Los Angeles Rams. This will end the long and polarizing ownership of Arte Moreno.

However, this will not be the end of Moreno’s involvement with the franchise. Despite no longer owning the team, he will still have a presence around the Angels organization.

“Arte Moreno is retaining a minority ownership of the team. The exact percentage has not been disclosed,” Angels beat writer Jeff Fletcher reported on Tuesday.

Moreno originally purchased the franchise in 2003. The organization was coming off its first World Series championship the year before. And there was a lot of hype around what was to come.

The beginning of Moreno’s tenure as owner went quite well. The Angels won five AL West division titles from 2004 to 2009. In this span, they also made the American League Championship Series twice.

Unfortunately, things began falling apart following the 2009 season. Los Angeles was no longer a perennial playoff contender despite having incredible talent. Mike Trout, Albert Pujols, and Shohei Ohtani donned Angels jerseys during this span. They even played together for a while. But they had little success to show for it.

The Angels have not made the playoffs in 11 seasons. This is the longest active playoff drought in MLB. In North American sports, only the NFL’s New York Jets have a longer active stretch without postseason action.

“The Moreno Family has been honored to steward the Angels for 23 years and we believe with KSE’s experience and success they are the best next owner for the franchise. The Angels Organization looks forward to continuing its commitment to the fans, our employees, the players and our business partners,” Moreno said of the sale in a statement to The Los Angeles Times.
