The Ohio State Buckeyes will open the season with a home opener against the Ball State Cardinals. Fans can expect to see a big change to Ohio Stadium this year, as head coach Ryan Day claims that Jeremiah Smith loves what the program did with the field.

Ohio State updated the turf this year, and it will be brand new for the 2026-27 season. Day told media members on Tuesday that the junior wide receiver is happy with the program updating the field, according to Joey Kaufman of The Columbus Dispatch.

“It was Jeremiah-approved,” Day said about the new turf at Ohio Stadium.

Smith has already put up big numbers in his first two years with Ohio State. His excitement to play on new turf could mean he’s up for an even bigger season for his third year in college football. He has a chance to lead the Big Ten in receiving yards for a third consecutive season this year.

The Ohio State star ended the 2025-26 campaign leading the Big Ten with 87 receptions and 1,243 yards, while adding 12 touchdowns through the air. He is projected to have another monster season as one of college football’s best players.

Jeremiah Smith was called the top prospect for the 2027 NFL Draft on Tuesday, as ESPN’s NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. pondered whether or not the 2025-26 All-American could be the first wide receiver taken No. 1 overall since Keyshawn Johnson in 1996. That’s assuming Smith enters the draft, as he is only a junior this year, and is still eligibile to return to college football next season.
