Astros ex-GM makes attention-grabbing Jeremy Pena, Hunter Brown contract extension revelations

Former Houston Astros general manager Dana Brown confirmed Tuesday that the organization made attempts to sign Jeremy Pena and Hunter Brown to contract extensions before his departure from the front office.

The revelation comes eight days after Houston parted ways with Brown on August 24. The Astros now enter another pivotal stretch holding first place in the AL West at 70-68.

Brown pointed to the organization’s reluctance to make lengthy commitments under owner Jim Crane. Foul Territory shared Brown’s remarks Tuesday on its official X, formerly Twitter, account, spotlighting the former executive’s comments about Houston’s approach to long-term contracts.

“We don’t do long deals here. I have high respect for Jim Crane. He’s been a successful owner. He doesn’t like doing bad deals, and I get it.”

The Astros hired Brown in January 2023 after he spent four seasons as the Atlanta Braves’ vice president of scouting. His tenure officially ended when the club announced a mutual parting of ways last week with Brown in the final year of his contract.

During Brown’s tenure, Houston completed a five-year, $64 million extension with Cristian Javier in 2023 and a five-year, $125 million deal with Jose Altuve in 2024. Other prominent players ultimately departed without long-term agreements. The Astros traded Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs in December 2024, while Alex Bregman and Framber Valdez later left in free agency.

Brown’s confirmation puts the Astros’ previous negotiations with two current cornerstones back into focus. Pena, the 2022 World Series MVP and a 2025 All-Star, remains under team control through 2027. Hunter Brown earned an All-Star selection and finished third in AL Cy Young Award voting in 2025. The Astros control the right-hander through 2028.

Both players later hired agent Scott Boras after previous extension talks failed to produce agreements. Houston enters the final month of the 2026 MLB season with a two-game AL West lead over the Texas Rangers. Pena and Brown still face unresolved long-term futures with the Astros.
