The Kansas City Royals received another difficult pitching update Saturday as Cole Ragans’ elbow injury moved toward surgery and left the club without a clear return timeline.

Ragans will undergo elbow surgery this coming Wednesday, July 1, with Dr. Neal ElAttrache. Doctors will determine the exact procedure during the operation, and Kansas City will wait for clarity on how long the southpaw could miss.

The 28-year-old has been out since early May because of a left elbow impingement. A brief attempt to work back through rehab did not resolve the issue, pushing surgery to the front of the plan after weeks of uncertainty.

MLB.com’s Anne Rogers shared the update on X, formerly Twitter, explaining why the Royals cannot yet project Ragans’ recovery.

The uncertainty makes the situation difficult for the Royals. A limited cleanup could create one type of timeline, while a more serious repair would point to a longer absence and a more complicated path back.

Ragans had struck out 45 batters across eight starts before the injury, giving the rotation a power arm and swing-and-miss presence. His absence leaves the Royals searching for answers at a time when stability has been tough to find.

The setback also removes one of the few starters capable of changing a series with strikeout stuff, forcing the Royals to lean harder on depth options while evaluating how aggressively to pursue outside pitching help.

The timing only adds to the frustration. The Royals enter Saturday’s second game vs. the White Sox at 34-49, last in the AL Central after a 22-1 loss in the opening game of the series.

Now, general manager J.J. Picollo and manager Matt Quatraro must plan without assuming Ragans will return quickly. Until doctors complete the surgery, the Royals can only wait for answers.
