Southpaw debuts wild new look on Pope Leo XIV hat giveaway night

The Chicago White Sox have a strong affinity for Pope Leo XIV. After all, Pope Leo is a native Chicagoan and has become perhaps the most beloved Chicagoan in recent memory.

On Tuesday, the fans went all out for Pope Leo XIV hat giveaway night against the Cincinnati Reds at Guaranteed Rate Field. The fans were seen wearing the Miter, the traditional pointed head garment worn to symbolize the office of the bishop.

Not only that, but the White Sox’s beloved mascot, Southpaw, joined in on the fun, per Pope on 35th.

Pope Leo’s connection with the White Sox is known. He famously attended Game 1 of the 2005 World Series at then U.S Cellular Field. Chicago ended up sweeping the Houston Astros in four straight games to win their first title since 1917.

In 2025, when Leo was chosen to be the Pope, virtually all of Chicago went into a frenzy. All the major sports teams tried to attach themselves to him. Pope Leo brought good vibes to the Bears during the NFL Scouting Combine in February. He was recently given a signed Caleb Williams jersey as the Bears look to go back to the playoffs. The Bulls and Cubs have tried their best to get on the Pope’s good side too.

But he has a special place in the hearts of the Southsiders. After all, things are looking really good for the White Sox. They are 61-57 and in first place in the American League Central Division. Though they lost to the Reds 5-4, it’s a far cry from the 100+ loss seasons of recent years.

Some have credited Pope Leo for Chicago’s success.
