Seahawks rumors: Devon Witherspoon contract talks get encouraging insider update

The Seattle Seahawks and Devon Witherspoon have been in contract negotiations throughout the offseason. With training camp underway, the latest word in the rumor mill suggests those talks are at least progressing in the right direction.

During a guest appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network claimed he believes the organization and Witherspoon will eventually come to an agreement on a contract. Exactly what that deal entails is currently unknown, but Rapoport thinks a deal could be announced before the start of the 2026-27 season.

“[Witherspoon and the Seahawks are] still kind of in a standoff trying to get that done,” Rapoport said. “That’s in a more advanced state than the Christian Gonzalez deal is [with the New England Patriots]… I think there’s a good chance Witherspoon gets done, I think.”

While it’s not clear how big of a deal Witherspoon will receive just yet, it’s been said that the former first-round pick is asking for a contract from the Seahawks that would make him the highest-paid CB in the league. But negotiations are still underway, as nothing has come to fruition just yet.

The 25-year-old cornerback is entering the fourth season of his NFL career. This is the first time in his career he is eligible for a new contract extension. Through 43 career games played so far, Witherspoon has recorded 249 combined tackles (170 solo), 4.5 sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.

Witherspoon was limited to 12 games last season due to a knee injury. After missing five games in the final stretch of the campaign, the three-time Pro Bowler returned to action for the playoffs and played a major role in the Seahawks’ Super Bowl LX.
