Patriots rumors: Insider suggest Christian Gonzalez contract extension may have to wait a year

Heading into the preseason, one of the biggest questions surrounding the New England Patriots is the long-term contract status of Christian Gonzalez.

The Pats’ home run of a first-round pick in 2023, Gonzalez is technically under contract with New England through the 2027 season after having his fifth-year option picked up, but because he’s played at such a high level, it’s hard to imagine he won’t be in line for a record-breaking new extension when his number finally comes up.

Unfortunately for Gonzalez, that might not come until 2027, as according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on The Pat McAfee Show, there doesn’t appear to be much traction on getting something done in the next few weeks.

“So it was interest. I do not know. I want to be quiet. I do not know why Christian Gonzalez was not a practice today. But it’s interesting to me that yesterday they agreed in terms of Hunter Henry on a new contract extension. And then the next day, Christian Gonzalez is not practicing,” Schefter noted.

“Now, as far as the Witherspoon (extension), you know, they’re still in kind of a standoff trying to get that done. That’s in a more advanced state than the Christian Gonzalez deal is. So nothing happens in a vacuum. I, you know, I think there’s a good chance Witherspoon gets done, I think. I don’t know about Gonzalez, whether it’s going to be this year or next year. But the timing is certainly something that I took note of today and is interesting.”

Fortunately for Patriots fans, Gonzalez’s absence wasn’t due to a holdout, as it was reported by Greg A. Bedard of the Boston Sports Journal that he suffered a minor injury that held him out of action. Unfortunately, until Gonzalez is the proud owner of a nine-figure contract, this will remain a story, which, based on Schefter, could last a very long time.
