Alex Cora drops ‘very honest’ Red Sox admission months after firing

Alex Cora began managing the Boston Red Sox in 2018. The team won the World Series that season and it seemed as if Boston had its manager of the future. Cora ended up having ups and downs between his two stints with the Sox (2018-2019, 2021-2026). The Red Sox fired Cora in late April after their slow start this season, and Boston has bounced back and become a postseason contender since. Nevertheless, Cora is expected to be a popular manager candidate this offseason if he decides to coach again.

During a recent interview on Dirt From the Dugout, Cora reflected on his time in Boston and made an honest admission about managing the Red Sox, via Foul Territory.

“I gotta be very honest, I’m always honest, but this is something people are probably going to say, ‘… He’s playing the corporate card.’ But no. That city, the one I managed, Boston, challenged me every single freaking day,” Cora said. “Every day, every day. From day one in that press conference in November, I want to say 7th, of 2017, all the way to April 25 in Baltimore this year.

“Just the expectations, I mean, shoot, you feel that you have to win 162 games in Boston, and they push you to be great. When you have bad days, you remember that you are in Fenway Park and you’re playing in Boston and you cannot mope around.”

Red Sox fans expect their team to win. While Boston had a World Series drought from 1918-2004, the ball club has already earned four championships this century. Cora clearly felt the pressure of managing in Boston, and he is not backing down from sharing his true thoughts on it.
