Rays’ Chandler Simpson stands alone with brutal home run stat

The Tampa Bay Rays are having a lot of success in the 2026 MLB regular season, but it’s certainly not because of outfielder Chander Simpson’s home run power.

In fact, Simpson appears to have none of it, as he has yet to hit one out of the park, at least entering Tuesday’s game against the Athletics.

Another interesting tidbit about Simpson’s season was shared by Talkin’ Baseball during the Rays-A’s showdown.

“Every player with 150 or more plate appearances has homered this season except for Chandler Simpson, who is second in the AL with a .307 batting average in 447 plate appearances,” Talkin’ Baseball posted on X (formerly Twitter).

However, Simpson does not need power to make a huge impact on the Rays. What he lacks in home runs, he makes up for with his speed. He started the day leading the American League with 33 stolen bases. That speed has also helped propel him to the top of the AL with six triples. Before Tuesday’s game, he was batting .305 with 24 RBIs.

Simpson made his MLB debut in 2025 with the Rays and played 109 games last year without hitting a home run, so it will be quite a moment for Tampa Bay and its fans when he finally makes contact with a ball hard enough to send it out of the park.

A quick glance at his advanced stats can help explain why he’s yet to hit a home run. He is in just the first percentile of several metrics that indicate a player’s power, such as average exit velocity, hard-hit percentage, bat speed, and barrel percentage.
