Rockies place Chase Dollander on IL with elbow strain

After Colorado Rockies pitcher Chase Dollander exited the matchup against the Pittsbugh Pirates with an elbow injury, as the team eventually lost 7-2 on Thursday, the extent of the young star’s issue has been revealed. While the Rockies have been enjoying a breakout season for Dollander, he will now be put on the injured list (IL).

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Dollander has been placed on the 15-day IL due to a “right elbow strain.” In the start against the Pirates, Dollander only threw one inning and 28 pitches, allowing three earned runs, five hits, and walking one batter.

“The Colorado Rockies place their budding young pitching star, Chase Dollander, on the 15-day IL, with a right elbow strain,” Nightengale wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

At the time, the injury was said to be arm tightness, which was sustained during the disappointing start against the Pirates on Thursday.

“Rockies starter Chase Dollander is leaving this game with an injury after allowing an Endy Rodriguez double and walking Jared Triolo. The Rockies bullpen will have to cover eight innings, already trailing 3-0. This is an opportunity the Pirates have to take advantage of,” Colin Beazley of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote on X.

Rockies’ Chase Dollander didn’t know of the issue after the game

So far this season with the Rockies, Dollander has thrown a 3.89 ERA to go along with 47 strikeouts and a 3-3 record in 10 starts. The 25-year-old would speak after Thursday’s game and wasn’t too sure of what the issue was, with manager Warren Schaeffer mentioning arm tightness.

“I don’t know; I’m not sure,” Dollander said, via MLB.com. “I don’t want to say too much before anything else happens – not to freak myself out or anyone else.”

“Just general arm tightness is what we’re going to roll with right now,” Schaeffer said. “I’m sure it had something to do with the way he was throwing the ball early.”

At any rate, it remains to be seen how Dollander comes back from the elbow injury, as Colorado has a 17-27 record, which puts them last in the NL West.
