Panthers sign ex-Dave Canales Buccaneers QB after Haynes King injury

Haynes King sparked new conversations for ascending up the Carolina Panthers quarterback room. But his epic Thursday performance led to an NFL Injury. Now head coach Dave Canales lures in a familiar face from his Tampa Bay Buccaneers run.

Panthers insider for the Charlotte Observer Mike Kaye revealed Saturday who’s joining the NFC South franchise.

“The Panthers are expected to add former Bucs QB Kyle Trask following Haynes King’s hamstring injury, per a league source,” Kaye posted on the social media website X, formerly Twitter. “Trask worked under Dave Canales in Tampa Bay in 2023. He also worked out for the team last week.”

The Georgia Tech star willed the Panthers to the Thursday Pro Football Hall of Fame Game win over the Arizona Cardinals. King called his own number and powered into the end zone to seal the 33-30 preseason opener win. He finished 21-of-34 for 180 yards and tossed two touchdowns to Anthony Tyus III and Ja’Seem Reed.

King also added 39 rushing yards on three carries, showcasing his dual-threat capabilities. The Yellow Jackets turned loose King multiple times with his feet last season under head coach Brent Key.

King’s performance left fans and analysts believing he, not Thursday’s starter Kenny Pickett, should serve as Bryce Young’s primary backup. Pickett hit 8-of-11 passes for 62 yards. But endured one interception before giving away to King.

The Panthers face the Buffalo Bills next Saturday. Pickett rises as the potential starter there amid King’s injury. But Carolina capped off the weekend watching franchise legend Luke Kuechly earn his Hall of Fame induction.
