Why Blue Jays’ George Springer was scratched vs. Phillies

With the Toronto Blue Jays coming out of the 2026 MLB trade deadline, the team is looking to turn its season around by racking up some wins, though injuries could halt the journey to the postseason. As the Blue Jays feature slugger George Springer, he would be scratched from Saturday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies, with the reason revealed.

According to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet, Springer is dealing with left shoulder tightness, which manager John Schneider revealed he had been “dealing with it for a couple of days.” In fact, Schneider was looking to give Springer an off-day because of it, as the change had Jesus Sanchez move to designated hitter and Myles Straw at left field.

“Blue Jays scratch George Springer due to left shoulder tightness,” Davidi wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Manager John Schneider said Springer has been dealing with it for a couple of days and he was looking to get him a day soon anyway. Jesus Sanchez moves to DH, Myles Straw in left field.”

For any fan concerned about the health of Springer, it must not be too serious, as Mark Feinsand of MLB.com would say that if needed, Springer is available off the bench.

“George Springer was scratched from the Blue Jays lineup with left shoulder tightness, but manager John Schneider said Springer is available off the bench,” Feinsand wrote on X.

So far this season, the 36-year-old has recorded a .234 batting average to go along with 12 home runs and 36 RBIs in 86 games, as it remains to be seen when Springer will return and if it’ll be in the series finale against Philadelphia on Sunday.
