Russell Westbrook gets 100% real on playing in 2026-27 amid NBA free agency
This is the point of the NBA season where there are still players left on the free agent market, and they’re usually veterans. Similar to last offseason, Russell Westbrook is one of the few remaining on the list, and it’s been quiet when looking at where he might play this upcoming season.
Westbrook was recently asked about being a free agent and his future in the NBA, and he kept it real on his thoughts surrounding this time of the season.
“I don’t think about it honestly. I love playing basketball, and if it happens, it works and that’s my plan,” Westbrook said via CNN.

Westbrook knows the talent that he still possesses, and he can still help a team try to compete. Last season he was with the Sacramento Kings, and though they were one of the worst teams in the league, he was able to be a mentor to the young players. At this point of his career, he’s bringing value on and off the court.
There have been some rumors surrounding the Kings wanting to bring back Westbrook so he could mentor Darius Acuff Jr., according to NBA insider Jake Fischer.
“Among tonight’s items, sources say the Kings are considering adding one of various veteran guards to help mentor No. 7 pick Darius Acuff, to where Sacramento is now considering a return for Russell Westbrook, in addition to signing Victor Oladipo,” Fischer wrote.
Westbrook may not be opposed to returning to the Kings, but it wouldn’t be shocking if he wanted to play for a contender at this point in his career. He can be a high-energy guard who comes off the bench and gives it his all on both sides of the ball.
With the season still far away, there’s enough time for a team to pick him up.
