Athletics’ Gage Jump makes Fenway Park history not seen in 98 years

It did not look like a good day for the Athletics as they prepared to play a Saturday afternoon game against the streaking Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. The A’s had lost nine games in a row against the Red Sox and the home team was riding a 9-game winning streak.

The Red Sox had handed the Athletics a 13-1 beating Friday night and they jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning against starter Gage Jump. However, the Athletics pitcher was not about to surrender to Boston as the left-hander had his fastball working and he shut down the Red Sox attack after the opening inning.

The Athletics went on to reverse recent fortunes with a 7-3 victory. Jump was dominant throughout the majority of the game, as he struck out 11 batters in the win. That was the most strikeouts any Athletics pitcher has recorded at Fenway Park since 1928. He struck out Red Sox slugger Willson Contreras three times.

Jump improved his record to 5-7 with the victory. He allowed 6 hits and 2 earned runs in 6.0 innings. He walked 2 batters and he kept the Red Sox from hitting any home runs.

The Athletics hit two home runs in the game as Tyler Soderstrom blasted his 19th long ball and Henry Bolte hit his 5th. Jacob Wilson led the way for the Athletics offense as he slashed a pair of doubles.

The Red Sox had 10 hits in the game and threatened in the bottom of the ninth inning, but newcomer Erick White lined out to centerfield with two outs and the bases loaded. Bolte caught the drive to give the Athletics the much-needed victory.
