Liberty’s Breanna Stewart breaks silence on Betnijah Laney-Hamilton’s release

The New York Liberty made the decision to waive Betnijah Laney-Hamilton earlier in the week after being one of the longest-tenured players on the team. It had been a rough season for Laney-Hamilton, as she’s played the lowest minutes in her career, as well as receiving seven straight DNP-CDs.

There were rumors that Laney-Hamilton would be traded at the deadline, and it was communicated that she wanted to have an opportunity on another team.

Days after the release, Breanna Stewart was asked about Laney-Hamilton, and she spoke about what she’s meant to her over the years.

“She’s been the heart of this team well even before I got here, and I think that it’s really sad to see her go, and I know a lot of people are having that similar sentiment. But also, ready for her to see where her next stop is. You know what I mean? Like to put a positive spin on it. Like it’s not a goodbye. It’s a see you later. She’s just been someone who’s uplifting, even when she’s not been on the court while dealing with injury,” Stewart said via Fiifi Frimpong of New York Daily News.

“She’s a bright spot that we’ll definitely miss. My message to her was, our relationship goes beyond the Liberty… B and I have known each other since we were like teenagers with USA Basketball. 16U team, that type of thing. So I’ll still be in her corner.”

It seems like this was more about basketball for Stewart, and both ladies were close going back to when they were younger. In the end, Stewart wants what is best for Laney-Hamilton, and the hope is that she can find another opportunity with the team.

There should be several teams looking to sign Laney-Hamilton, and it wouldn’t be a surprse if she was on a new team soon.
