Cowboys’ Brian Schottenheimer shares multiple training camp injury updates

The Dallas Cowboys are enjoying a rare drama-free training camp session this year. There is plenty of time for things to go wrong, of course, but the organization has seemingly avoided conflict with star wide receiver George Pickens and is inspiring a healthy amount of optimism. There is still one huge question mark surrounding this team, though. How will the revamped defense perform after a brutal 2025 showing? Like every position group, it can only do so much when unhealthy. The head coach addressed two recent injuries on Saturday afternoon.

ESPN NFL Nation reporter Todd Archer reported that rookie linebacker Jaishawn Barham sustained a groin injury and is not practicing on Saturday. Brian Schottenheimer does not consider it to be serious, however. Veteran safety and free-agent addition Jalen Thompson has been battling a hip issue, but he “will work back into practice,” per Archer.

Based on those latest updates, it seems like the vibes should remain positive in Oxnard, California. Both of the aforementioned players are tasked with providing reliable production to a unit that allowed an NFL-worst 30.1 points per game last season, so it is encouraging to know that they are not in danger of missing extended time.

Barham was highly effective on run defense for Michigan in 2025 and also brought plenty of pressure in the pocket, recording four sacks, 21 solo tackles and 10 tackles for loss. The third-round draft pick adds valuable depth to Dallas’ LB room. Hopefully, he makes a swift return to the practice field.

Thompson instantly becomes an important member of a secondary that allowed the most passing yards in the league during the 2025 campaign. He is an excellent tackler who posted six passes defended, one sack and one forced fumble with the Arizona Cardinals last season. If the 28-year-old can stay healthy and contribute as expected, the Cowboys could be far less susceptible to the big play.

Dallas will ease Jalen Thompson back into action, monitor Jaishawn Barham and continue to tweak its much-scrutinized defense ahead of the new season.
