Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin reveals where he’ll live after NHL retirement
The Washington Capitals and their fans can hardly remember when Alex Ovechkin wasn’t on their team. Ovechkin has spent his long NHL career all in in Washington, and helped the franchise win a Stanley Cup. The star is now revealing where he will live when he finally retires.
“It’s clear that I’ll live here. My family, loved ones, and friends are here,” Ovechkin said about Moscow, per the Russian news outlet sports.ru.
The Capitals star has a very close relationship with the city of Moscow.
“Ovechkin was born and grew up in Moscow, where his mom played professional basketball, and his dad played professional soccer, both for Dynamo Moscow. Ovechkin also got his start in hockey with Dynamo, joining the club’s academy and playing the first four years of his professional career with the team in what was then called the Russian Super League,” Russian Machine Never Breaks reported.
Many NHL fans thought Ovechkin was going to retire at the end of the 2025-26 NHL season. The Capitals missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Soon after the campaign was over, though, Ovechkin decided to return for another season.
“I know I can still play. I know I still can bring energy to the locker room and energy on the ice,” Ovechkin said, per NHL.com.
Washington beefed up their roster this offseason. The goal for the Capitals is clearly to give Ovechkin at least one more shot to win a second Stanley Cup.
“Having the greatest goal-scorer in NHL history and the most important player in our club’s history return means so much to our organization, our fans and our city,” Capitals general manager Chris Patrick said.
Ovechkin led the Capitals to a Stanley Cup title in 2018. During the 2025-26 season, Ovechkin led Washington in points with 64.
