Kevin Gausman drops high praise for Cubs after stellar debut
With the Chicago Cubs clashing with the Kansas City Royals this weekend, Friday’s 6-4 win displayed the debut of starting pitcher Kevin Gausman, who was traded to the team from the Toronto Blue Jays. As fans were hoping the best is yet to come for Gausman on the Cubs, he had a standout debut, as he spoke about his time getting acclimated to his new team.
Subsequently, he recorded his sixth win of the season; he would pitch seven innings, striking out four batters, walking one, and allowing two runs and four hits. Despite Chicago being on the road, when Gausman walked off the mound, he would hear cheers from the Cubs fans.
“That was cool,” Gausman said, according to MLB.com. “Definitely something I wasn’t expecting, being on the road. That’s the cool part about being part of such a huge fan base. They travel well. They’re excited about this team for good reason.”
Comparatively, there has been no doubt a whirlwind of a time for Gausman, as after spending four seasons with Toronto, he now finds himself in a new environment with Chicago, admitting that “it’s been a lot.”
“Not just baseball. There’s a lot going on. That’s why I say that it was nice to get out there and just focus on getting guys out,” Gausman said.
Cubs’ Craig Counsell on Kevin Gausman’s debut
Consequently, Gausman needed an outing like this in his debut with the Cubs, as entering the game, he had a 4.38 ERA, and manager Craig Counsell gave praise to the 35-year-old after the game.
“That’s one of the reasons you trade for somebody like this,” Counsell said. “This is a guy that we can’t throw something at him that he hasn’t seen. Guys like that are prepared for anything. That doesn’t take away the emotion of getting traded, or seeing your old team kind of come to town right away.”
At any rate, Counsell would continue on Gausman being able to handle tough situations like the one he’s in, as the hope is that he could bolster the team’s playoff hopes.
