Nick Wright’s Thunder ‘great team’ bar is a height Steph Curry, LeBron James never reached

On Monday evening, the Oklahoma City finished off the Los Angeles Lakers in a four-game sweep to punch their ticket to another Western Conference Finals. The Thunder are undefeated in these playoffs at 8-0, and are looking to win a second straight NBA championship.

With the continued success in Oklahoma City, chatter is growing that we might be looking at one of the all-time great teams, but one person pumping the brakes on those talks is sports media personality Nick Wright, who was recently asked by Dan Patrick what it would take for him to view the Thunder in that light.

“Three in a row… There is a direct line of history on how many championships can be won by a team or by a player…  Russell era, what’s the max? Well I guess it’s 11… 70’s to 80’s, what’s the max? Kareem, six,” said Wright, per Dan Patrick Show on X, formerly Twitter.

“…As the league has gotten deeper and harder, the maximum championships that can be won is going down… if OKC all of a sudden not only goes back to back, but wins three in a row when we haven’t had that in a quarter century, I think it will be undeniable that they’re just one of the most well-put together teams ever.”

Evidently, the Thunder will have to pull off a three-peat, something that LeBron James and Stephen Curry haven’t accomplished, and that hasn’t been done since the Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal-era Lakers a quarter century ago, to gain Wright’s cosign among the all-time great teams.

For now, Oklahoma City’s focus will be on winning the first back-to-back championships since the Kevin Durant Golden State Warriors eight years ago, a task that will continue in the Western Conference Finals against either the Minnesota Timberwolves or the San Antonio Spurs.
