NFL rumors: Steelers insider suggests 4 splashy moves, including Brandon Aiyuk trade

The Pittsburgh Steelers have gone through a lot of changes this offseason, most notably hiring Mike McCarthy to replace Mike Tomlin as the team’s new head coach. Reuniting McCarthy with Aaron Rodgers signals that the Steelers are ready to try to compete this season, but their roster doesn’t seem ready to do so.

As a result, it would make sense to see the Steelers make some moves to try to win now before the season gets underway. Rodgers is entering his final season, meaning a reset is coming in 2027.

On Monday, Alan Saunders of SteelersNow pitched four big moves that Pittsburgh could make in order to improve the roster in a hurry. One of those moves was to make a trade with the San Francisco 49ers for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, though he also urged caution with such a decision.

“Do the Steelers have an acute need at the position as they did two summers ago? Not at all,” Saunders wrote. “Has Aiyuk demonstrated very clearly that signing him to that contract was a mistake by the 49ers? Absolutely.”

The Steelers already traded for a big-time wideout this offseason when they acquired Michael Pittman Jr. from the Indianapolis Colts. DK Metcalf is also back and will very likely be Rodgers’ No. 1 receiver next season, so adding Aiyuk would give Pittsburgh a very formidable room.

Saunders also suggested signing Taylor Decker, who was a solid starter at tackle for the Detroit Lions. That would secure the offensive line in front of Rodgers, which could really help this offense take off in 2026.

The two defensive moves that Saunders pitched would also make a big impact. The Pittsburgh insider suggests that the Steelers trade for Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jer’Zhan Newton or Miami Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks. Brooks especially has been statistically one of the best linebackers in football and is a tackle machine, making him a popular target.

Aiyuk has made a lot of noise recently on social media, and he and the 49ers are clearly heading for a split. Whether the Steelers would give up a draft pick for him or not is the question that remains unanswered.
